A weekend in my healthy family life

Each weekend we have a few things we prioritize: spending time with our kids, exercising, grocery shopping and meal prepping for the next week. This weekend was no different except that we had a little family getaway planned as well.

At the hotel

Friday nights we usually just relax. This Friday we ate leftovers for dinner and hung out with the girls. After they went to bed we had a bottle of wine and watched a few episodes of Food Network Star (exciting I know).

Saturday had a little more going on. Ryan went on a 15 mile run while the girls and I played at home. I also attempted to pack since we were leaving that afternoon for the weekend getaway. Ryan got back from his run just in time for Ivy and I to go to yoga class (yoga is great for people of all ages, especially kids).

When we were back from yoga, we got ready, packed up, and hit the road! At the hotel all of the kids got to swim and we celebrated our niece’s birthday. It was a nice night away from home!

Super excited for swimming at the hotel!

We only stayed one night so we were back home by early afternoon on Sunday. On the way home I finalized my grocery list and meal plans for next week.

As soon as we were back home it was off to the races to get everything done for the week! I ran to the grocery store while Ryan stayed back and tried to get some dishes done while the girls played. Once I got back from the store, I started all of my meal prep and cooking for the week while Ryan went to the gym. I made a big batch of a farro and bean soup so that we can eat it for lunches throughout the week. Then I made mushroom lentil loaf, basic mashed potatoes (i.e. potatoes + milk + butter) and sauteed green beans (w/garlic & lemon) for dinner.

Our Sunday dinner

I always try and make a large serving meal for dinner on Sunday because leftovers are such a time saver during the week. I also cut up some veggies to eat with eggs in the morning throughout the week.

If you are picturing me peacefully cooking all of these things in the kitchen while my girls are playing nicely in the adjacent living room, you are so wrong. It was me trying to do about 3 things at once with my two girls hang on my legs while my youngest cries that I am not picking her up so she instead start slamming cupboards (because that’s always fun for toddlers).

Until the girls are older and more independent, trying to get anything done in a one parent to two kids ratio is difficult but we make it work as best as we can! If that means I am prepping green beans on the couch so the girls can at least be right next to me, so be it!

Overall, it was a good weekend and we were able to accomplish all of our priorities for the weekend: spending time with the kids, grocery shopping, exercising and meal prepping. I suppose I still need to do laundry and haven’t fully unpacked from the weekend but that’s for another day because I also prioritize sleep!

What are your “must do’s” each weekend?
