Wellness can mean so many different things, so you really have to prioritize on what is important to you. Wellness can be anything from eating healthy, exercising, mindfulness, healthy finances, balancing work and life, and so much more. I write about many of these on the blog but I really have to prioritize wellness focus areas.
There are two areas that I’ve been focusing on as of late for wellness in my life. These wellness areas are mindfulness and eating healthy. I am still working on the other wellness areas but there aren’t my main focus right now.
My first focus area is on eating healthy.
If you’ve been following my blog at all, you know that I am always trying to focus on healthy eating in hopes of losing a few extra pounds and/or maintaining my weight. Recently, I even started using Whole 30 rules to change my mindset with food. I thought it was maybe working just following the rules during the work week until the weekend came, but let’s just say that I may have just ate like 5 pieces of leftover Halloween candy. The struggle is real folks.
As we are coming into the Holiday season though, I am trying to be more mindful about my food consumption in hopes of losing a few pounds before the holidays fully hit. Calorie counting has been helping me to drop a few pounds because following Whole 30 rules, I wasn’t losing weight, I was only maintaining because I ate enough until I was full. Granted it was healthy stuff (bacon’s healthy right?) but still too much of it to lose weight. So I went back to my roots of calorie counting and I’ve dropped 3 lbs.
I dropped the 3 lbs through focusing on healthy eating for my meals (Whole 30 style) while being light on my snacks and treats.
My second focus area is on mindfulness.
Now I realize that mindfulness can mean a ridiculous amount of things but to me, it is really being present in the moment. This allows me to appreciate each moment, whether it is at home being silly with my girls or at work for an important client pitch. There are a few things that I’ve been doing to make it more concrete and “real” for me.
The first thing I’ve been doing is meditating. I started meditating when I did my yoga teacher training and have continued to do it on and off since then. I have not been consistent though. So right now, I am part of an accountability group with my yoga tribe (i.e. some of the folks that went through teacher training with me) to mediate each day. I find that meditation helps to calm the body and the mind. I’ve also found that it helps me to remember things and stimulate new thoughts. For example, I randomly remember that we needed to get our flu shots while meditating. Weird, I know, but it was a helpful thing to remember!
The other thing I am doing to be more present is really trying to disconnect from my phone more. This is especially true when I am home after work because I have a limited amount of time to spend with my girls.
I want every moment I have with them to be about them and being fully present. Not about whatever someone just posted on Instagram. I’ll confess that this is harder said that done because everything is on my phone so if we are talking about our calendar for the next day, I need my phone. It’s all about the baby steps though people.
Wellness priorities will change and that’s ok.
These are my wellness priorities now. I may change them up in a few weeks or maybe months. It is all about having goals and being flexible to adjust those goals based on where you are in your life and what your body and mind needs. We all want wellness, you just have to decide what that means to you and how to prioritize it.
