A weekend of yoga teacher training

Hope everyone had a great weekend! Mine was full of yoga because I had teacher training all weekend. The program is a weekend training program which means one weekend a month I am learning about yoga all weekend. By all weekend, I mean 6 pm-9 pm on Friday and 8 am-6 pm on Saturday and Sunday. The program is one weekend a month for 8 months and also includes a project and about 8 book reports as well. It’s a large time commitment and is difficult to be away from the girls all weekend but it is important to me so I prioritize it in my life with the support of my family.

Yoga is a passion of mine so I am in training to deepen my practice while giving myself the ability to share yoga with others because I really believe it can benefit everyone!

Each yoga training weekend has a different focus and theme. This weekend we had guest teachers come in and we focused on yoga anatomy, sanskrt and prenatal yoga. The yoga anatomy teachings were really insightful because they explained how your muscles, skeleton, energies of the body and breath can all impact a pose. Understanding all of these components of a pose helped me learn how to make adjustments in my own poses and to identify how to help others with adjustments when teaching. Let’s just say, after this weekend, my bridge pose will never be the same!

Yoga training weekend where we learned about the bones of the body, hence the skeleton hanging there.

Yoga is so much more than a workout for me. It is something that gives me energy and keeps me grounded. Many people associate yoga with being a workout of vinyasa flows, but there are actually three components of yoga:

Breath + Awareness + Movement = Yoga

As you can see, it is more than just exercise. I love it for the movement to keep me in shape but I also love it for the awareness and breath. Those components are almost more important to me because it keeps me grounded through all of life’s shenanigan’s including a stressful meeting at work or when my toddler is screaming.

Speaking of toddlers, you may be wondering how I am able to be away from my kids all weekend. Well, I am very lucky to have a supportive husband and family that are willing to do a little extra to allow me to participate in this program. My husband knows that this program is something that I have been wanting to do for a long time and something I am passionate about so he is all about supporting me in that. Also, we have parents who are in town so we have back-up support as needed when Ryan needs to get in his training runs.

This weekend we were extra lucky that Grandma and Grandpa took the girls on Saturday night so Ryan was able to get in his long run and get some house chores done AND we even went out on Saturday night! Having adult time and “dates” is important to us to keep our relationship strong so we went out for sushi, went to a brewery and ended the night singing karaoke….which means I MAY have stayed up way too late on Saturday and was struggling a bit on Sunday morning at yoga but it was all worth it 😉

Overall it was a great weekend of yoga and getting to go on a date with my husband. Yoga teaching training always leaves me feeling like I “filled up my cup” and very balanced. While I do have “mom guilt” for being away from my girls, I think it is important for them to see me pursue things I am passionate about in life. So many moms don’t pursue their interests once they become a parent because their entire life is focused on their children. That is something I am trying to change for myself and hopefully inspire other moms to feel that they can spend time to pursue their interests. I really feel that it will make us all better moms.

What are your passion and interests that you are pursuing or want to?
