How I simplify when traveling for work and play

I am in the middle of four trips within a two week time period. With so much travel, I really try to simplify meals because it makes everything easier. When I am traveling for enjoyment, I like simple meals because I don’t want to spend vacations in the kitchen. When I am traveling for work, I plan simple meals for my family while I am away. This makes things easier on me for prep and my husband for cooking while I am gone.

Here are my trips and meals plans for each:

Trip #1: I went to a friend’s cabin in northern MN where we went to Fargo, ND so Ryan and another friend could run the marathon. It was a nice getaway weekend despite the horrible weather. Thankfully Fargo marathons end inside the Fargo dome so we didn’t have to get rained on to see the guys finish. While at the cabin, we ate simple dinners where I made spaghetti for everyone one night. The next night our friends made steaks and potatoes.

Ryan got a personal best at the marathon. The girls are really excited about it.

Trip #2: I came back from the Fargo weekend on Sunday and that same afternoon, I went to the airport to fly to London for a work trip. London was actually beautiful weather of about 70 degrees and sunny everyday! I was able to get outside during my work trip to soak it up and go on a few walks. I was at London until Friday and during the week, I ate every meal out so was limited in healthy eating options. While I was gone though, I prepped simple meals for my family. I made salsa chicken in the crockpot to eat for dinners a few nights and then also planned for Ryan to make spaghetti. For lunches, he just ate turkey sandwiches with veggies & guacamole.

Trip #3: I came home from London on Friday where I unpacked and then packed again to leave for the cabin with my family on Saturday morning. For the cabin meals, my mom brought up prepped lasagna for Saturday. One Sunday we grilled salmon to eat with salad and green beans. For lunches we grilled turkey burgers one day and had leftovers the next. We came back from the cabin on Monday afternoon and had little energy so we ordered pizza for dinner.

Trip #4: I am going to be traveling to NYC for work Wednesday through Friday. This means I am planning more simple meals for my family this week. I am going to prep pulled pork for the slow cooker and roast sweet potatoes for them to eat while I am gone.

It has been a busy two weeks but just one more trip to go! Thankfully my family is alright with eating lots of leftovers and simple meals when I am gone. When traveling so much it is difficult for me to always eat healthy but I try to make good choices when there are options. I also always try and get right back on track when I get home, which is key.

In addition to simplifying meals, I simplify workouts even more.

This basically means I just go on walks, do sun salutes and meditation. When I am traveling, it’s easier to focus on a simple thing to keep up my yoga practice, like sun salutes. I pick a salute depending on time of the day and how I am feeling. I’ve really been liking sun salute “L” lately. For meditation, I actually try and meditate on the airplane when I am traveling for work. It is maybe not the ideal environment but I find it works for me. I am stuck sitting there for hours at a time so may as well take advantage of it!

I thankfully don’t usually travel this much because it is really a lot of work packing an unpacking, not only myself, but my kids and dog. It also takes a lot of planning for meals and workouts. I can’t wait until I am finally home this next weekend and don’t have to live out of my suitcase for awhile.

What do you do for meals and workouts when you’re traveling?
