As mentioned on a previous blog post I am running the Surf the Murph 100 mile race in October. As I prepare to take on this challenge, I will be providing monthly updates on my progress. This is as much to hold me accountable to my training as it is for anything else, but I’m hoping others find this interesting and maybe inspirational as well. I will also be mixing in some advice on goal setting I’ve learned over the years for running and exercise that I hope will be useful for anyone interested in starting or continuing an exercise routine. February was a rough month for outdoor training in…

How I reset after vacation
When I go on vacation, my diet goes out the window. Ok, that’s a little dramatic but I do become much more relaxed about my food consumption during vacations because a girl can’t just eat kale, almonds and avocados all day, everyday. It’s all about the balance, right? I just wrote about how we went to wine country and you better believe it that I indulged in wine during our trip, drinking more than the doctor recommended one glass a day and I had no regrets. Well maybe the next morning when I was a bit more thirsty than usual (maybe with just a slight hangover) but besides that, no…

How we enjoy California wine country
I’m not sure if I’ve shared this much on the blog yet but Ryan and I are huge fans of wine. This has love has developed over time and increased in affection for me especially as the years have gone by. I used to be all about red wine but now I have realized that white wine has a place in my life; heck even a rosé has a time and a place 🙂 . With our love of wine, we have made a handful of trips (5 to be exact) to the Napa/Sonoma areas of California. On the first trip we went to all of the “touristy” wineries and…

Breakfast is the most important meal of my day
I love breakfast, it is my favorite meal. Actually brunch is my favorite but I don’t get a chance to partake in that meal much anymore with work and kids so now breakfast is where it’s at :). Breakfast has become my most important meal of the day, and not just because it’s my favorite. Many studies have shown that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. These studies usually claim similar reasons as I do on why breakfast is so important: It gives me energy for the day. I don’t like to run on empty (although I will admit that other studies have shown the benefits of…

Spring clean your skincare routine
It may not feel like it in MN (where I live), but spring is only a few weeks away! As spring starts to approach, many of us start to spring clean our homes. Today I wanted to talk about spring cleaning our skincare products (for men and women). With all of the knowledge these days about potentially harmful chemicals that could be in skincare products, I wanted to share how to clean them up with safer skincare products! *stepping on my soapbox* As I’ve stated before on the blog, I am a safer skincare advocate (i.e. I am a consultant for Beautycounter). Being part of Beautycounter allows me to be…

Yoga is my jam
So I know I have an entire page dedicated to yoga including my journey on how I started practicing and how it has brought me to training to be a yoga teacher. In case you haven’t noticed, I love yoga. Yoga is my jam. This past weekend, I continued my yoga teacher training journey. I was looking forward to the weekend because I needed a reset. February was getting to me with all the snow which made for long commutes, many days inside, and school closing days. February also included busy work days with traveling. These things combined left me less motivated for practicing yoga: I lost my mojo this…

Every home purchase should be viewed as a “forever” home
This post is brought to you by Ryan. I had a weekend of yoga teacher training so I haven’t had a chance to write a post yet. I will give a recap on my yoga weekend on Wednesday’s post, but for now, enjoy Ryan’s post about home buying that will not be popular with real estate agents 🙂 Back in 2006, I was fresh out of college and beginning my career and I really wanted a house. I thought this was the logical next step most people take since some of my friends and colleagues were buying houses (little did I know, the average age for a first time buyer…

Finding my goal weight
With losing weight, you usually have a number in mind that is your “goal” weight. This number may change throughout the years (as it has for me) but there is usually always some magical number you have in your head where it is your “ideal” weight. Although, when I started out losing weight, I didn’t have a number in mind. I just knew that I weighed too much because I was having to buy larger and larger clothes and was low energy every day. I would be out of breath doing everyday things like walking up the stairs. I knew I needed to lose weight but didn’t have a “goal”…

Our debt journey: how we paid off over $100K in debt over the past 3 years
This post is brought to you by Ryan 🙂 On one of my previous posts I wrote about how living a healthy financial life creates “optionality”. One tip I had for living healthier financially is to limit fixed expenses as much as possible. The most obvious fixed expense are debt payments. We have been working very hard to get out of debt over the past few years so I wanted to share our story so you can understand how we got there and hopefully to inspire others to pay off debt as well. By our mid-20s, we managed to accumulate a significant amount of debt. For better or worse, I…

Making time for our relationship
This is a holiday weekend for many folks including myself and my husband since we have Monday off for President’s day. We didn’t plan anything special for this weekend and just did our usual weekend things of a Friday night Target run, Saturday library visit, and outdoor play in the snow. We were lucky to have my parents offer to take our girls for Sunday through Monday so that Ryan and I could get some things done around the house and have some adult time. Having time with your spouse without having to worry about the kids is very important to us because it helps our relationship stay healthy. With…
